Board of Directors
Carol Giamoni Copelan: President
Born and raised in New Jersey to Italian/Sicilian parents Carol moved to San Diego in 1981. Carol originally attended school to become a nurse. She worked in the nursing field for many years, putting herself through school. One of her favorite jobs was working for a veterinarian in San Diego (Agape Veterinary Clinic) assisting the hospital in numerous capacity, even assisting with surgeries. Carol started to work for the Better Business Bureau in San Diego in 1988. In July of 1996 Carol moved to Santa Barbara to manage and direct the BBB of the Tri-Counties with her husband, Rick. She is now the VP/CFO/Director of Operations of our local BBB.
While in San Diego, Carol adopted a white Pomeranian named Paco Joey ( P.J ); and before leaving the area, adopted another Pomeranian, Sukey. She lost Sukey January 2008 at the age of 17! Carol now lives with and loves a Pomeranian named “Lily-Belle”, a distant relative of Sukey. She has also adopted three cats from ASAP since January 2008. Rounding out their diverse home are 4 birds a Bourke’s parakeet named Aloha, 2 cockatiels named Niñe and Squeaky and a Conoure named Conrad they are also accompanied by two rabbits a Dutch named Tinker and Dutch/Dwarf named Willie Wonko.
Carol has always wanted to work with and help all animals and has a deep passion for animals. Anyone who knows Carol or visits our local BBB knows about her love for them. She eagerly joined Shiva’s Center after meeting the founder through CARE Hospital. When invited to join the board, she jumped at the opportunity to work with and advocate for animals, as well as increase public awareness of the animal-human bond. In her spare time, Carol enjoys photography, specializing in photos of animals and humans with their animals.
Trish Lane: Board Member & Founder
Dr. Trish Lane founded Shiva's Center for the Human-Animal Bond in 2006. The organization is named in honor of her Golden Retriever, Shiva Berlin Lane (1990-2003) who has been one of her most valued teachers (read more about Shiva at "Shiva's Story"). Trish also co-founded Santa Barbara's first and only 24 hour emergency and referral animal hospital (California Animal Referral & Emergency Hospital - C.A.R.E.) in 2003. C.A.R.E. Hospital is also dedicated in Shiva's honor (www.carehospital.org). She is committed to the care and well-being of both domestic and wild animals - providing pro bono services for wildlife at CARE Hospital (when Wildlife Network in closed), working with city and county animal services, and as a 24-hour facility - providing a place for Good Samaritans to take lost and injured animals of all types.
Trish is a licensed clinical psychologist and has been licensed and working in the mental health field since 1988. In addition to her roles at Shiva's Center and CARE Hospital, she also works part-time at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital providing psychological services and maintains a small private practice. She was the first to establish a pet loss support group in Santa Barbara (facilitated by animal lovers/advocates who are also licensed clinicians). When Shiva died in 2003, she was surprised to find that our animal loving community had no place to grieve the loss of their companions. The group has been in existence since 2004 and meets twice monthly at Santa Barbara Hospice.
Trish lives with her veterinarian spouse and their three dogs. Two of their 'kids' (Zack and Deuce) are rescues, the other, a Golden Retriever, named Maya. The couple moved to Santa Barbara in 2002 to establish C.A.R.E. Hospital and to live out Trish's dream to live in Santa Barbara.
